Global solar power demand grows nearly 50% in 2016, Europe drops by 20%

 Solar PV capacity additions 2016

European countries installed around 6.9 GW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity in 2016 – a 20% decrease compared to the 8.6 GW that was grid-connected in 2015, according to SolarPower Europe (Brussels), the association of the solar power sector in Europe.
In the same period, the global on-grid solar PV market grew by about 49% to around 76.1 GW in 2016, from about 51.2 GW in 2015.
“Once a solar leader, the European Union is in danger of being eclipsed by Asian powerhouses, such as China, in both solar power production and installations,” comments Michael Schmela, Executive Advisor and Head of Market Intelligence at SolarPower Europe.
Even the U.S., with a much smaller population than the EU's 28 member countries combined, added about twice as much solar power capacities in 2016.
