Atlantis, NEW join forces to developer 160-MW Wyre tidal energy project

 Atlantis Tidal Energy Turbine

Marine renewables developer Atlantis Resources has entered a partnership with Natural Energy Wire to develop the 160-MW Wyre tidal power project.
The plant will be located between Fleetwood and Knott's End off the Lancashire coast, according to Atlantis, and reflects the United Kingdom's growing interest in exploiting the potential of its shorelines for hydrokinetic generation.
"The Wyre project is an opportunity to develop an extremely cost-effective tidal range project, which represents excellent value for the consumer," Atlantis CEO Tim Cornelius said. "It also fits well with the government's stated 'northern powerhouse strategy' as well as contributing to the development and regeneration of our towns and cities."
Cornelius said the project will be "extremely cost effective", requiring only a small impoundment, which will also allow it to mimic actual tidal cycles and have a minimal environmental impact.
"This is not just a low cost renewable energy project," said Bob Long, managing director of Natural Energy Wire (NEW). "This is a project that will provide flood protection to an area which will be increasingly vulnerable to rising sea levels.
"It is a project that offers huge opportunity for the regeneration of Fleetwood and the surrounding area, and a chance to enhance the recovery of a previously seriously contaminated estuary."
The Wyre project has been in development for several years, Long added, with collaboration from companies including Mott Macdonald, BAM Nuttall, Arcadis and Andritz Hydro.
